FAQ - Central Texas
What are you launching?
The Reconnect Central Texas provides computer recovery and recycling opportunities to Central Texas residents. The project’s goal is to raise awareness of the importance of responsibly recycling used electronics. The program is managed by a partnership between Goodwill Industries of Central Texas, Dell Inc. and the City of Austin.
How does the program work?
Consumers in Central Texas can drop off any brand of used computer at local Goodwill locations.

Where is the program available?
Consumers can drop off used computers at any Goodwill Industries of Central Texas location.
How much does it cost me?
There is no charge to drop off a used computer at Goodwill.
What happens to my computer?
Ownership of the computer passes to Goodwill once it is collected. Goodwill will refurbish and resell the used systems in its Computer Works retail store. Systems and parts that cannot be refurbished will be recycled by Goodwill in an environmentally responsible way. Funds raised from Goodwill’s refurbishment operations help support job-related services for individuals with barriers to employment within the Central Texas community.
What about data on my hard drive?
Customers are responsible for removing their data from hard drives and other storage media before collection. Customers are further advised that a number of programs to wipe the hard drive are available online.
Is this tax deductible?
You may be able to deduct the value of your computer for tax purposes, however, check with your tax advisor for more information. The $10 you give for the curbside collection is not tax deductible.
Does it matter if the computer is in working condition?
No.
Will you take broken monitors?
Yes, monitors are considered universal waste. Ideally, they should to be specially packaged. Monitors with broken glass may be put in a lined cardboard box. You can line the inside of the box with a large plastic garbage bag. The box should be sealed and clearly labeled “broken monitor” with the date on it.
Do you accept software and toner?
Yes.
How does my business recycle its computers?
Many companies offer asset recovery services for businesses to recycle or donate their unwanted computer equipment. You can visit www.dell.com/environment for information on Dell's Asset Recovery options for business and public customers.
What if I live outside of the Austin area?
Consumers can drop off used computers at any Goodwill location in Central Texas . In the future, the partnership hopes to identify a sustainable electronics recycling model that other communities may choose to adopt.
How do I become a sponsor?
